Tennis Athletes of the Week by Chase Derocher

Updated on 08/29/2023

This past weekend, the Bay City Central Varsity Tennis Team four doubles team place 2nd in their bracket. Seniors, Parker Sochacki and Joshua Lijewski made an amazing breakthrough in their tennis careers at the Bullock Creek Invitational this past Friday.

Sochacki and Lijewski first faced Owasso, where they won their first set 6-1. They then got out matched in their second set, scoring 4-6. Then, they made an amazing comeback to win the match in a 10 point tiebreaker, scoring a surprising 10-2.

In their second match, Sochacki and Lijewski swept Bullock Creek’s four doubles team with a first set of 6-1 and a second set of 6-0. They then moved on the the finals in the doubles four bracket to face off against Bay City Western in the match for first place.

Sochacki and Lijewski put up a good fight in the first set, but they ended up losing the set 3-6. In the second set, Bay City Central had to forfeit while they were ahead 4-3 as it was the BCC Marching Bands’ Senior Night that Sochacki had to attend, where the made it just in time.

When asked how he felt about having to forfeit, Lijewski stated “I’m upset, especially because they also had said that they would have to leave early as well. But I understand and am glad that Parker was able to make his senior band festivities in time.”

Tennis County's Showdown by Parker Sochacki

Updated on 08/29/2023

On September 22nd, Bay City Central’s Varsity Tennis team had the annual Bay County Tennis Tournament where Bay City Central, Garber, Western, and John Glenn had the chance to get on the Championship Trophy for Bay county.

The cold and humid morning of the Midland Tennis Center made it rough for some of Central’s Tennis players. Even through the weather, teams such as Josh Lijewski and Parker Sochacki were able to pull out wins for the tennis team. Lijewski said” I couldn’t feel my fingers but we still pulled through for the team.”

The following rounds started to thin out the best out the best in Bay County. The winners of most divisions were the reigning champions Garber, which swept most of the pools except for singles 4 and doubles 2. Central may not have won any pools but it was still a fantastic learning experience for the tennis team, especially being the first year at the tournament for most of the players.

The tennis season is coming to a close soon, so make sure you come out to as many matches as you can while the tennis team is still fighting. With Valleys coming up, many seniors will have to hang up their rackets for good.

Varsity Tennis Wrap-Up by Parker Sochacki

Updated on 08/29/2023

The 2018-2019 BCC Varsity Tennis season is now coming to a close. Throughout the season, the boys team has done extremely well, scoring in many tournaments and duels. With most of the varsity team graduating last year, the team did better than expected. With many doubts on the team’s shoulders, they still managed to pull through.

The duel records for the BCC Varsity Boys tennis team is 4-6-1. Now this is not a winning record, but all of the boys except four have never been on varsity before, so this was a large skill jump for most of them. Some duels would even go for 4 hours just to pull out that win for BCC.

Tournaments are very limited during the tennis season because of the amount of people trying to get together on one day to show their skill. BCC did well at both tournaments so far with Parker Sochacki and Josh Lijewski scoring second in both tournaments, and the rest of the team covering many other placements. Tournaments would get the boys out of school but they could take up to 10 hours to complete.

Bay City Central’s Varsity Boys Tennis team broke most expectations. Once again most of the Varsity team will graduate this year and it will be left to new members once again. Taking up the mantle of the BCC Varsity Tennis team will be a big weight on their shoulders but we can’t wait to see how they will do.
