Mason Schumacher at States by Skylar Coberley

Mason Schumacher took seventh place in the 215 pound weight class during the Division 1 Wrestling State Tournament at the Ford Field on March 12. Schumacher, who had his 100th career pin earlier this season, finished with a 44-5 record.

Schumacher wrestled his first match of the tournament on Friday. He lost in overtime to a wrestler from Muskegon Mona Shores in overtime, after tying up the score late within the third period. Schumacher was not out of the tournament yet, because a wrestler has to lose twice on Friday, in order to not be able to continue on to Saturday.

Schumacher, who needed to win two more times to advance to Saturday, won his next match by pinning a wrestler from Saline High School during the second period with three seconds left.Schumacher had to wrestle in the blood round to advance to Saturday and to be able to place in the top eight. He ended up winning against a wrestler from Temperance-Bedford by the decision 3-1.

Schumacher still had a chance to wrestle in one more match against Jeremy Parker from Flushing for seventh or eighth place. The two have met three times this season before this tournament. Schumacher pinned Parker in three minutes to take seventh place.

After a big rivalry match between the two wrestlers, Schumacher said, “I am excited that I pinned him and won the final match of my career.”
